What is a Good Age for a Tree House?

What is a Good Age for a Tree House?

Congratulations, you’ve just welcomed your first bundle of joy into the world! That’s definitely a reason to celebrate! As you look gaze into your little one’s eyes, you envision all of the wonders and adventures that await your growing family. High on your long list of things to do is to build a treehouse for your child. But, you might be wondering, what is a good age for a tree house?

What is a Good Age for a Tree House?

Yes, a treehouse is every child’s (and parent’s) dream. It’s really incredible how much joy a house built atop the trees can bring. A tree house is a place where your child’s imagination can run wild and make memories with friends and family.

The Best Age for a Tree House

The truth is, there is no right or wrong answer to this question. It really depends on your personal preferences, what type of tree house you’re planning on building, and how you intend for your child to use the structure. While there isn’t any “best” age for a tree house, it’s safe to say that you really should wait until your son or daughter is walking and stable enough on their feet. That said, the ideal age can range anywhere from toddlerhood (2 or 3 years old) to school-aged (6+ years).

If you’re envisioning an old-school, rudimentary tree house – the kind that requires a ladder to access – it would be best to wait until your tyke has really developed their gross-motor skills. Your child is going to need to use those arm and leg muscles in order to safely use the ladder.

If you’re picturing a more elaborate tree house – one that is equipped with a solid set of stairs, complete with hand railings, and maybe even a slide that can be used to make it back down to the ground, then you might be able to provide your child with this incredible gift when they are toddling; 2- to 3-years-old.

Of course, you want to make sure that your son or daughter has really mastered the whole walking thing first. Walking up and down stairs (especially if there are railings involved) and using a slide is a lot easier than climbing a ladder. However, it’s really important, for obvious safety reasons, that your little one is stable on his or her feet.

What Age Can a Tree House be Used Until?

In addition to trying to decide what age is the best age for your son or daughter to start using a tree house, you might be wondering at what age they will stop using it. Just like the ideal starting age, there is no right or wrong age that a tree house can be used until. After all, it doesn’t exactly have an expiration date. Depending on the size and the construction of your tree house, your child could very well continue using it well up into his or her teenage years!

Should you build a tree house?

When it comes to using a tree house, there is no best age. The ideal time to use a tree house really depends on your child’s specific needs, preferences, and interests. Whatever age you decide to provide this wonderful gift, however, there’s no doubt that it is something that your little one will enjoy for years to come.
