What is Deep Watering Method for Trees?

Are you planting a new tree in your yard? Do you live in an area that receives sparse rain during the year? If so, learning the deep watering method will benefit your new tree or existing grove. You might be wondering, what is the deep watering method? How do you use it, and how is it different from the standard way of watering trees?

What is Deep Watering Method for Trees?

Like all the plants in your yard, trees need water to survive. However, many trees are accustomed to seasonal rains, meaning they can go without water if you don’t get it during the season. Nevertheless, if you’re planting a sapling or a young tree, the roots need water to prevent the tree from slipping into a dormant state or dying. Let’s unpack everything you need to know about the deep watering technique for trees.

How to Deep Water Trees

One of the primary benefits of implementing the deep watering technique to trees in your yard is that it delivers water deep into the ground, nourishing the root systems.

The most common way of executing the deep watering technique is through the use of aeration tubes installed around the base and root area of the tree. This watering system provides water, oxygen, and nutrients to the roots. As an added bonus, aeration tubes are relatively easy for any gardener to install, even a novice.

You can install aeration tubes alongside other shrubs and plants surrounding the tree, allowing them to benefit from the deep watering technique. To install the system, place four aeration tubes around the outside edge of the planting pit.

Push them into the ground to their level with the soil surface outside the planting pit. Remove all non-biodegradable material from around the root ball, cut the wire root basket, and remove any burlap from the top half.

How Deep Should the Water Reach?

The deep watering system pushes water around eight to 12 inches deep into the soil. That’s a big difference from surface watering, letting the water penetrate five to six times deeper into the watering area, nourishing the root ball.

Using the right system for deep watering ensures your trees get the hydration and nourishment they need to thrive. Gardeners also benefit from using less water, preventing evaporation and water loss during the day.

Newly Planted Trees Need Most Water

Newly planted trees and saplings require plenty of water to thrive in your garden. Deep root watering gives the root ball the nutrients and hydration it needs to grow at a faster rate than simply using surface watering methods.

Slow Watering is Best

Using this method, the water should slowly penetrate the ground and not cause localized flooding around the tree. Steady, slow water distribution guarantees your tree gets all the water it needs. Overdoing it with surface watering clogs the soil and increases evaporation and wasted water.

Deep Water During the Morning

We recommend deep watering during the morning or overnight when the sun isn’t strong. If you water the yard after 10am, you’re entering the hottest part of the day, increasing evaporation.

Watering in the morning ensures you saturate the soil properly, driving the water underground where it can feed the tree roots. Or you can water in the evening after 5pm when the day’s heat fades, and evaporation risk is low.

Deep Root Watering Isn’t Suitable for All Plants

Deep watering is great for trees but is not the best solution for all plants. Many flowers only have roots that spread across the surface and don’t penetrate deep underground. Shrubs and trees have deeper root systems allowing them to benefit from the deep watering technique.
