How Do You Pick a Good Tree?

The selection of a tree for the garden isn’t just an overnight decision. Trees are just like any other feature that you might like to add to your existing garden, and they require careful thought. The garden’s climate (and area), as well as the type of tree, and the placement of the tree are all things that you may have to think about before making your final selection. How do you pick a good tree, according to the gardening experts? Let’s explore!
How Do You Pick a Good Tree?
Here’s how to make sure you pick the most optimal type of tree for harmony in your garden.
1. The Garden’s Climate and Area
All climates weren’t created alike, and it’s the first thing a gardener should consider when they’re picking out a tree to plant.
Research the area you’re in and how drastically temperatures will heighten (or drop) through the year. It’s a good idea to know your climate and know which plants and trees flourish in your general area.
If you choose wrong, your choice of tree might never reach its full potential in its current conditions.
2. The Type of Tree
A fir tree isn’t going to enjoy the same conditions as an oak tree, and that’s true for every different tree type you could mention. There’s no single, correct answer to this question – it all depends on what you’ve got in your garden right now, and what could compliment your space the best.
Choose trees that are known to flourish in your climate and trees that can withstand the temperature or condition extremes that your area is known for.
Choose whether you want a small or large tree and something that provides a considerable amount of shade cover or not. This, too, can change what type of tree you finally decide on.
3. The Tree’s Placement
When most gardeners get asked, “Have you thought about where you’re going to put the tree?” they don’t necessarily have an answer ready.
Depending on the type of tree you’ve chosen for your garden, remember that trees need more space than plants or shrubs. Placement is important, and wrong placement could mean that you create accidental shade where you didn’t intend to.
Before transplanting a tree into your garden, take the time to make sure you’re putting it in the right place.
Perfect growing conditions such as sunlight, soil type and more are necessary. For example, trees prefer enough sunlight, though some trees will prefer partial sunlight.
Most trees don’t like to be planted too close to anything else: make sure there are no obstacles in the way of the tree’s future growth.
4. The Tree’s Hardiness
Trees aren’t all made to thrive under the same conditions: the outside hardiness of the tree can matter, especially when you live near an area that gets a considerable amount of snowfall throughout the year.
For surviving colder conditions, trees with a harder exterior are more likely to stand up against the cold. Softer woods, like applewood, may take some damage during the colder months – or die off completely under the wrong circumstances.
Match the ideal conditions of the tree with your climate for the best possible results and a happy garden.
